“Don’t Leave Me Hanging” portrays an imaginary landscape of pills suspended in various states. The states can be grouped into two: one symbolizing desperate efforts to connect, belong, and not be missed—so hanging—and the other, though unsure of the outcome, choosing to break the chain and fall out. Yesum Yoon’s research delves into the contemporary use of over-the-counter and nutraceutical pills, examining how their perceived values and promises significantly affect behaviors and lifestyles more than their medicinal properties. People, eager to live fully and actively, turn to these easy-buy medications for quick relief and daily supplements to enhance health and achieve balance. However, relying on these empty promises keeps one in a state of near-burnout—neither fully dead nor alive.
